On Monday 25th September the first Chemistry Symposium of the academic year was hosted in the School Hall at Sherborne Girls. Over 150 sixth form chemistry students from Sherborne Girls, Sherborne School, Leweston and Kings School Bruton attended. As well as showcasing scientific literature research, the Symposium aims to academically inspire and enrich both the participants and assembled audience.
The audience was treated to array of diverse, yet highly informative, presentations which covered a range of topics from ‘The Discovery, Effects and Extraction of Digoxin’, ‘Microplatics’, ‘The Chemistry of Allergies’, ‘The Synthesis and Uses of Paracetamol’ and the ‘New Elements’ (nihonium, moscovian, oganesson and tennessine). Amelia, Emelia and Insha started the evening with an informative lecture on the chemistry of allergies; how they occur and the role of antihistamines in alleviating the symptoms. Later in the evening, Agnes So, Juliana Ma and Crystal Cheung gave an excellent presentation on the synthesis of paracetamol and how it acts to reduce the pain in our bodies.
The evening concluded with refreshments and a chance for the students from all four schools to socialise and reflect on the scientific presentations.
