During the recent half term holiday, a small group of M5 and L6 students, accompanied by Mrs Henderson and Ms Chapman, took part in the study visit to the Austrian capital, in order to gain an insight into the cultural heritage of this vibrant city and develop their linguistic skills.
They stayed in a hotel near the city centre, and had a full itinerary, visiting many of the key sights in Vienna and taking in the culture at local art galleries and museums. Activities included a tour of the historic city centre with its cathedral and grand imperial buildings, an excursion to the UN headquarters in Vienna, a morning at the Spanish Riding School in the Hofburg, a ride on the famous ‘Riesenrad’ (Giant Ferris Wheel) in the Prater park, and a visit to Schloss Belvedere.
A particular highlight was the day trip to Schloss Schönbrunn on the outskirts of the city, which began with a tour of the many elegant rooms in the palace and ended with a maze and labyrinth. The girls kept their focus very well in spite of the hot weather, helped by the regular supply of Italian ice cream, followed later by a traditional Austrian meal which gave them the opportunity to sample Knödel, Kaiserschmarrn and Wiener Schnitzel!
A wonderful cultural and linguistic experience for all!
