B&K Structures completed the overall CLT building frame at the end of May and site focus switched the internal work. The initial work includes fitting the mechanical and electrical services on a ‘first-fix’ basis. At the same time the roofing sub-contractors started work fitting insulation and waterproofing prior to the zinc sheeting that will be used as the final roof finish.
The school has recently received the carbon footprint estimate which certified the net carbon savings (by using the CLT as a structure) at over 426 tonnes.
The school also received another certificate for the supply chain data which was included in the carbon figure above, showing that the Spruce timber used in the build was sourced 100% through sustainable forest management. The total volume of timber was 686 cubic metres, with delivery miles totalling nearly 10,000 miles.
The whole exercise was a great example of ‘just in time’ delivery logistics and management during some very challenging weather conditions across Europe.
To facilitate the internal and external works a huge ‘birdcage’ scaffold has been erected within the main concert hall which allows access at all levels for the linings and service fixings and further external scaffolding to allow safe access to the roof areas.
There are now around 35 workers on site each day – mainly inside the building but in August the brick cladding for the building will commence. Currently work on the last ‘hook up’ of the ground sourced heat supplies is taking place.
