A Valentine’s Day tradition stretching back decades was in full swing this week at Sherborne Girls with the arrival of hundreds of roses at Kenelm Boarding House.
Fran Barnes, Housemistress at Kenelm, explained: “The whole initiative has been driven by the lower-sixth girls who have set up a roses ‘HQ’ in-house. Messages are attached to the roses and distributed round the school community with money charged for the service being split between two chosen charities: Sparkle Foundation Malawi and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation “
Orders have been flooding in from across the Sherborne Schools including the boys’ school and Sherborne International with students looking to show friends and family that they thinking of them while they are at boarding school.
‘Kenelm Roses’ is a school tradition which is remembered with great affection and dates back more than 30 years but it is in recent times that the girls have twinned it with a charity element.
This year’s organisers set themselves a target of raising as much as possible, but have been overwhelmed by support with the total pledged standing at well over £1000.
