Success at the British Schoolgirls Indoor Skiing Championships

It was an early start for our girls at the British Schoolgirls Indoor Ski Championships held at the Snozone in Milton Keynes on Sunday 15 September.

Arriving at the venue at 7am, the girls were quickly into the spirit of the day and started practicing on the artificial snow for more than an hour before the competition commenced.

With over 150 competitors representing more than 20 schools in the Slalom event, the competition was tough and the Sherborne Girls squad of Millie N (Captain), Sophie M, Izzy P, Alice P, Anna C, Charlotte W and Islay W did exceptionally well.

The eighth racer of the day was Millie who set off at a blistering pace and set a very fast time of 13.63seconds. This was a time that was matched by only two other racers in the first round. Entering the second round in third place overall, Millie produced another outstanding time of 13.56seconds placing her in first overall position. This strong second run proved too much for the opposition, and Millie claimed the overall first place position in the slalom competition.

Each girl skied well, contributing to the team's overall performance and making it a very successful day for Sherborne Girls. The Sherborne A team won the silver medal in the Slalom Team event and after working their way through the heats and beating Wycombe Abbey B in the Open Parallel Slalom Relay Semi-Final, they advanced to the final. In a hard-fought final the Sherborne A Parallel Slalom Relay Team were narrowly defeated by Wycombe A.

For the girls skiing in the B team they learned a huge amount about racing techniques, performing under race pressure and race protocols, and performed extremely well throughout the day.

Charlotte W was the trump card....having never raced before she quickly adapted to the conditions performing well in the Under 16 Slalom event and earning her place in the Open Parallel Slalom Relay A squad.
