As part of our Careers programme we were delighted to hold two careers events last week in London. The first focused on the law and we are enormously grateful to a current parent for enabling us to hold this event at Herbert Smith Freehills’s London office. A panel of Old Girls and Old Shirburnians explained what their roles were, what they enjoyed about their job, a typical working day and gave a brief overview of their career to date. This gave attendees a flavour of what each role entailed and sparked off questions which resulted in a very lively debate. Guests were then able to network freely and seek first-hand advice for their own circumstances before the panel took questions from the floor. The role of Artificial Intelligence and how this will affect future employment and career progression within the work place, was discussed in depth.
We are enormously grateful to our panel hosts who included a Principal Knowledge Development Lawyer, an Intellectual Property Solicitor and an English Qualified Queen’s Counsel.
Our second event was aimed at those considering a career or working in Finance and the City and was held at Investec’s London office. Again, we had a very strong panel of hosts, who included a Global Head of Talent, Investment Manager and Board Director, Audit Manager and Old Girls also covered Risk Management and Commodity Operations. There was a lively exchange of ideas and it is testament to the strong bonds of our alumnae that those who are at the top of their careers are willing to give up their time to help others who are starting out.
“I just wanted to let you know that yesterday’s law event was brilliant. Thank you for organizing it, it was very useful and interesting”.

“The City and Finance event was very informative and has helped me find out which areas of finance I’m more interested in and the next steps I can take”.
