We were delighted to welcome parents and friends to this year’s Sports Day, followed by the annual Midsummer Festival event. The fantastic summer weather, family picnics and house spirit created a wonderful community atmosphere as guests cheered on the girls in their races and enjoyed the opportunity to catch up informally with each other and members of staff.
Following sports day prize giving, guests were invited to the topping out ceremony for the new arts centre and to watch tennis on the grass courts before the Midsummer Festival and silent auction began.
This annual charity event raises money for the school's Candlelight Bursaries fund. Auction prizes such as the skiing trip to Val d'Isere, a week's holiday in Cornwall, and a flight in an aerobatic display plane, meant that the bidding got off to a brisk start. By the end of the evening, ticket sales coupled with the bids placed on the silent auction, raised a total of £12,000. The money raised will be a welcome boost to funds used to support girls whose family circumstances mean they wouldn't normally be able to attend an independent school.
Headmistress Jenny Dwyer, explained:
"Our candlelight bursaries offer truly life-changing opportunities. We are committed to increasing the number of bursaries available to ensure we can fully support more girls through their schooling at Sherborne Girls.
"Our thanks go out to those families and businesses who supported and donated the wonderful lots for our auction."
