Our Christian Foundation

A foundation in faith

We are proud of our Christian foundation. It gives us an inherited faith and values on which to draw in the contemporary world, grounding our community in a culture of compassion, courage, integrity and generosity. We believe that each girl is unique and precious and able to make a difference in the world for good.

Girls are encouraged to connect with their spirituality, in ways that suit their needs, habits and beliefs. We believe the Christian tradition is characterised by its profound generosity of spirit, opening up the space in which everyone can become more fully themselves and confidently play their part.

While formal and informal Christian worship is the core of our practice, we give girls the freedom and encouragement to navigate their way through the adventure of belief and unbelief. We encourage girls to pause for reflection in their busy lives and consider the needs of others as well as learn to love and accept themselves.

For those in search of truth and meaning for whom a religious worldview does not resonate, we help them explore in ways that are life-giving and rigorous. We do not seek easy answers and are willing to embrace uncertainty and complexity.

For those of other faith traditions, we honour their beliefs and encourage their expression, knowing that we can all learn from the differences between us.

Throughout the year there are opportunities for girls to grow in their Christian faith, through confirmation classes, informal discussion groups like Focus and creative prayer spaces in the Ark.

Girls take an active part in planning or leading weekly Prayers and Sunday services as well as Abbey Eucharists and Joint school services. Our strong choral tradition and senior choir ensure that the quality of our collective worship is beautiful and inspiring to all.

The Christian ethos and values of Sherborne Girls shape our shared existence at Sherborne Girls and our practices are at the heart of who we are and what we do here. We know that our strength lies in our community and our commitment to each other’s flourishing. Explorations in faith, belief and spirituality are therefore important in our life together.
